Police Action - Keeping Your Vehicle Roadworthy

To keep your vehicle roadworthy and legal on UK roads, make sure it has valid insurance, vehicle tax and an MOT where required. However, an MOT alone does not mean a vehicle is safe to drive. You are responsible for ensuring it is roadworthy every time you use it.

Before setting off, check that:

Your tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread, are correctly inflated and have no cuts, bulges or other damage.

All lights are working properly, including headlights, brake lights, indicators and number plate lights.

Your brakes are working effectively.

Your windscreen, windows and mirrors are clean, undamaged and provide a clear view of the road.

Your steering and suspension are in good condition and the vehicle handles correctly.

Your seatbelts are fitted and working properly.

Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and screen wash are topped up where needed.

There are no warning lights on the dashboard indicating a fault.

Your registration plates are clean, secure and easy to read.

A quick walk around check before each journey can help spot problems early.

Keep you safe and prevent offences, fines, penalty points or prosecution for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
